Low-pass output and slope selector

The low-pass output has its own VCA, controlled via the corresponding VCA CV input. With nothing patched into VCA CV, 7.5V is normalled internally, keeping the VCA at unity gain.

The slope selector switches between 12, 18 and 24dB/octave, corresponding to two, three or four low-pass poles. Lower pole counts produce a gentler transition between passband and stopband, and often sound more aggressive overall—especially as you turn up the Core Temperature...

Core Temperature

At its lowest setting, MELT behaves relatively politely when fed a single signal at typical Eurorack levels. As you turn it up, headroom inside the filter core is reduced and the interaction between the input signal and resonance becomes increasingly nonlinear. At high settings, the input itself starts to distort.

MELT’s character also depends on the combined levels of its three audio inputs, the resonance setting, and whether resonance compensation is active.

Explore the entire range of Core Temperature rather than simply turning it all the way up. Its effect can be particularly pronounced at gentler slope settings, especially 12dB/octave.

Main Inputs

The inputs 1-3 are summed and fed to the filter. Input 2 and 3 have an attenuating level knob.

Input 1 has a VCA and the corresponding knob acts as a attenuator to the LVL1 CV input. If no signal is patched into LVL1 a voltage of 7.5V is normaled so the VCA is always opened.

Auxiliary Input

Bypassing the filter, the AUX input is routed directly to the output VCAs, opening up another set of options for shaping the final sound.

You could add an overtone-rich signal with its own envelope to emphasise transients, blend in a sub oscillator, inject short bursts of noise for percussion synthesis, add a sine wave fundamental (in the spirit of a certain classic polysynth), or mix in another filter path in parallel before the final output VCAs. Jumpers on the rear of the module determine which outputs receive the auxiliary signal — remove or reposition them to configure the routing as required.

The AUX input also has its own VCA, and the associated knob attenuates the CV input of that VCA. With nothing patched in, 7.5V is normalled internally, keeping the VCA at unity gain.
