CEN2RION: The Animation Station
CEN2RION is a six-input, two-output scanning mixer that lets you explore an exciting new modular approach to mixing, signal distribution, and FX routing.
Cleverly controlled with just two knobs per layer, the twelve high-quality VCAs can mute, solo, blend, sum, route, or split signals across two busses. CEN2RION can process audio, CV, or both at the same time.
Three operating modes: DUAL does 6-to-2 mixing with independent controls for Layers A and B, LINK offers 6-to-2 mixing with a main control (A) and a bipolar offset (B), while SPLIT provides dual 3-to-1 mixing with offsets, e.g. for stereo applications.
Channel switching is smooth and click-free thanks to a short vactrol-like release curve.

Some Details
Three control modes
DUAL Mode
In this mode, Layer A and Layer B operate completely independently.
Each layer's output is determined solely by its own controls and CV inputs.
LINK Mode
In LINK mode, Layer B follows the settings of Layer A.
The SELECT and WIDTH knobs on Layer B act as bipolar offsets with zero in the centre.
This mode is especially useful for mixing six mono inputs to stereo (Out A and B).
SPLIT Mode
Like LINK mode, Layer B follows Layer A's settings, but each layer is limited to three inputs:
Layer A processes inputs 1, 2 and 3 while Layer B handles inputs 4, 5 and 6.
This mode is mainly intended for mixing three stereo pairs (1+4, 2+5, 3+6) to stereo using the Layer A settings.
Blend characteristic
A switch determines how adjacent channels are mixed when only partially included in the selection window defined by SELECT and WIDTH. It applies to both layers.
SMOOTH Mode: Channels are blended proportionally based on how much the selection window overlaps.
DISCRETE Mode: Inputs are selected "all-or-nothing".
Selection Range
A switch determines what the SELECT parameter picks as its lowest value. It applies to both layers.
1-6 Mode: The lowest SELECT setting picks input 1, and with WIDTH at its minimum, only input 1 is included in the mix.
OFF-6 Mode: The lowest SELECT and WIDTH settings result in silence, as no input channel is selected.
Full CV Control
Each parameter of the two layers has its own bipolar CV input and attenuverter.
Each CV input is paired with an attenuverter knob (attenuate & invert), which has a neutral position at the center.
Turning clockwise increases the modulation depth.
Turning counterclockwise also increases the modulation depth, but inverts the CV signal.
Layer B selection invert
NORM Mode: Layer B behaves as described in the previous sections.
INVERT Mode: Instead of determining which inputs are included in the mix, the selection window (defined by SELECT & WIDTH) determines which inputs are excluded. All other inputs outside the window will be mixed into the output.
Voltage Range
- Acceptable input range: +/-12V
- Effective modulation range: +/-5V
- A +5V CV will sweep a parameter across its full range, while a -5V CV will force a parameter that is set to maximum down to its minimum.
AUX jacks
The AUX A and AUX B jacks can function as either inputs or outputs, depending on the setting of a switch on the rear of the module.
This allows CEN2RION, among its many other uses, to act as a submixer or be daisy chained with other mixer modules.
